Monogram laundry.....

Back in the day before front-loading,

high efficiency washers…

linen maids and laundresses for the royals,

along with the common folk,

would go down to the river together for washdays.

Linens of fine fabrics were displayed

for all to see while drying.

To prevent any mix-ups of yours or mine…

families began marking them with stitching to

represent their household...

monogramming

MHM

it all comes out in the wash

it's just embroidery, have fun with it!

Oh Cathy, I love that little tethered bee! (and if you don't send your address, you'll never get your bread bag...)

I love this, Cathy! A very logical history to the monogram. Who knew they'd continue to be so popular today.

Any family would be proud to have one of your monograms on their linen - gorgeous.

Love this design. And I'm so happy to learn the original reason for monograms. You are a wealth of information!

That's pretty, looks like "queen bee" to me. I don't know what symbol I would use with mine. Might have to ponder that one.
Dessert looks good too :)

It's funny how something that started out as a practicality has turned into such a lovely luxury!

I do enjoy the wash so much more when I'm laundering the pretty monograms!
